Advanced GI Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship

The Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery fellowship is a one-year program that enhances the basic skill set accumulated during general surgery training with laparoscopic, robotic, and endoscopic skills.

The program consists of rotations with highly experienced faculty who perform both minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. The Bariatric Service is located at South Miami Hospital and is recognized as a center of excellence by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. Core faculty of the fellowship program are pioneers in the development of advanced laparoscopic colon surgery and robotic surgery.

Our vision is to offer a broad range of clinical services, superior clinical outcomes and the highest levels of satisfaction. Our Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Fellowship program offers the opportunity to train and influence physicians to incorporate our philosophy and high standard of patient care.

Fellows’ operative experience is expected to encompass 200 abdominal wall procedures and 125-200 bariatric procedures. The remaining experience is a mix of colon and foregut procedures and endoscopy. Total volume of surgical procedures commonly exceeds 600 cases.

Research

Scientific research is an important component of the fellowship program. Administrative support is available which includes a research administrator, research coordinator and research fellow(s). Surgeons in the Miami Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowship program are published in scholarly journals and present regularly at national society meetings, and the fellow is intimately involved in the data collection, review and publication of these projects.

We believe that contributing to the education of others (medical students, nurses, nurse practitioners, PAs and PA students) enhances the surgeon’s ability to effectively communicate with other health care professionals. To that end, the selected fellow will frequently participate in conferences, in-services, lectures, seminars and bedside teaching.

Eligibility Requirements and Application Schedule

Our program attracts, educates, and retains exceptional healthcare talent to serve the South Florida community. Program participants will be trained in the Baptist Health Way with a focus on quality, inclusion, compassion, and collaboration.

Eligibility Prerequisites

  • Fifth-year general surgery resident
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Application Requirements

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • ABSITE scores
  • USMLE scores
Acceptance and admission to the program is contingent on submission of all requested materials and meeting all eligibility requirements as determined by the program.

Curriculum

Block Experiences

Our program curriculum incorporates several block rotations typically lasting several weeks, giving trainees exposure to a wide variety of learning experiences throughout the duration of the program.
