Celebrating a Decade of Living Hope for Haiti (Video)

Living Hope Haiti Christian Mission and Baptist Health South Florida are celebrating ten years of life-saving surgical trips to Croix des Bouquets, in northern Haiti.

A team of 45 volunteers, including doctors, nurses, surgical technicians and support personnel, made the most-recent trip, just days after the passing of Hurricane Matthew through the southern tip of the country, where it left widespread devastation. The mission began in 2006, with the medical teams traveling three times a year to help the less fortunate.

More than 80 percent of Haiti’s population lives in abject poverty and access to medical care is often unavailable. The Living Hope Mission brings surgical treatment for a variety of conditions including hernias, tumors, burns and even life-threatening cases like appendicitis.

Calvin Babcock, chairman of the board of Baptist Hospital, says the passion and caring from the volunteer team is what makes this a special mission. “The most important message is that Baptist Health has been doing this for 10 years as part of being a faith-based, not-for-profit,” he said. “These are some of the kindest, loving, hard-working and dedicated people,” he added.
