Clinical Pastoral Education is an “action-reflection” model of learning that allows students to practice ministry in a clinical setting with supervision and support.  It is an introspective process designed to raise awareness of how family history, spiritual journey and cultural identity shape the lens through which the students see the world and relate to others.

Program participants practice their ministry with patients, families and staff and bring examples of their work to the small-group setting to reflect on with peers. The intention is to offer consultation and raise awareness of how their fears, biases, strengths and weaknesses may enhance or hinder their ability to be fully present and attentive to the person/s to whom they are ministering. This awareness helps the practitioner refrain from imposing any particular views onto others. Rather, they seek to understand what is important to those they are serving. Respect and compassion are upheld, and approaches and techniques are tailored accordingly.

This Master’s-level program, accredited by ACPE, helps participants reflect on their theology, learn behavioral sciences and integrate new learning into practice. Program participants learn how to listen deeply, sit with people in their pain and crisis and learn effective techniques to provide spiritual care to persons of all faith traditions as well as the non-religious.

Two training options are available:

  • Extended part-time program: 25 weeks with an average commitment of 17 hours per week. Time off is granted for all major holidays.
  • Summer intensive program: 11 weeks requiring a 40 hour per week commitment.

After successfully completing each training unit (a minimum of 400 hours) students will earn one ACPE credit.

Four to six participants will be accepted per cohort.

The Baptist Health South Florida CPE program offers Level I and Level II training. We are provisionally accredited with the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education.
