Baptist Health Baptist Hospital has been recognized as one of the highest-performing facilities in the country for cardiac surgery, after earning a top, three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedures. This rating is the highest a hospital can achieve, leaders there say, and places Baptist Hospital among the top 10 percent in the nation for this procedure.

“This achievement speaks volumes to the amount of work and effort our team performs on a daily basis to make sure we are giving patients the very best when it comes to cardiac surgical outcomes,” says Joseph T. McGinn, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon and chief of cardiac surgery at Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, a part of Baptist Health. “I am proud to be able to lead a talented group of medical professionals who make sure our hospital provides some of the most comprehensive care in our community and beyond.”
Baptist Hospital is the flagship hospital for Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, whose physicians diagnose and treat heart conditions by performing a variety of complex procedures. These include surgical treatment of heart failure, weakened or malfunctioning heart valves, and congenital heart defects in adults, says Dr. McGinn. “We also perform transcatheter aortic valve replacements and implant ventricular assist devices,” he adds.

Dr. McGinn is a pioneer in minimally invasive cardiac surgery and is known for developing “The McGinn Technique,” a minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting procedure that offers an alternative to open-heart surgery for some patients. He has performed more than 3,000 of these surgeries and trained hundreds of doctors in the procedure worldwide.
Founded in 1964, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) is an international not-for-profit organization representing cardiothoracic surgeons, researchers, and other healthcare professionals who are part of the cardiothoracic surgery team. STS members are dedicated to ensuring the best possible outcomes for surgeries of the heart, lung and esophagus, as well as other surgical procedures within the chest.
