Family Medicine Residency Faculty

Dr. Douglas Inciarte is the program director of the West Kendall Baptist Hospital-Florida International University Family Medicine Residency Program. Along with the WKBH family medicine faculty, he leads the training of our resident physicians. He is a strong advocate of facilitating, mentoring, and supporting their comprehensive training in Family Medicine while ensuring safe, compassionate and low cost of care for all patients.

He obtained his doctor of medicine degree from the Universidad del Zulia in Maracaibo, Venezuela and in 2008 completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), where he served as chief resident. He joined the faculty of UNMC as an assistant professor and was later promoted to Associate Professor due to his strong commitment to teaching and his clinical experience in the ambulatory and inpatient settings. As chief resident, he was awarded Department of Family Medicine House Officer of the Year and Department of Family Medicine/STFM Resident Teacher of the Year awards in 2008.

Dr. Inciarte also has management and leadership skills. He obtained a degree of Master in Medical Management from Heinz College at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Throughout his career, he has been also an active member of numerous academic and clinical operations committees. He has served as Ambulatory Quality Medical Director and as Chair of the Ambulatory Medical directors leading strategic efforts in the operations in Primary care and Specialty clinics including value-based metrics and population health.

Dr. Inciarte has edited, authored and published in peer-reviewed Family Medicine textbooks translated into several languages, such as the Taylor’s Principles and Practice of Family Medicine. He has presented and chaired at various local and regional scientific conferences.

As a clinician he has special interest in hospital medicine, complex chronic disease management, population health, IT innovation and the use of social media in healthcare. A passionate believer of patient centered care through collaborative teamwork, he also focuses on wellness and prevention to help patients to avoid disease complications to improve outcomes and cost of care.

The West Kendall program was established in 2012, attracts nearly 2,000 applicants each year for a class of four residents. It is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and has a full cohort of 12 residents.

Deepa Sharma, D.O., is a family physician and faculty member of our residency program at the Family Medicine Center at West Kendall Baptist Hospital. Dr. Sharma received her doctor of osteopathic medicine from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She completed an internship in internal medicine at St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., and a family medicine residency at Overlook Family Practice and Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J. Following her training, she worked in family medicine practices in New Jersey and later with Hawaii Permanente Medical Group in Maui. Dr. Sharma enjoys broadcast medicine and has been a host for the Health Channel on South Florida PBS and a radio show on health related topics that airs on Sirius XM.

Sophia Malary Carter, M.D., is a family medicine physician and member of our residency program training at the Family Medicine Center at West Kendall.  She completed medical school at the University of Rochester in 2013 where she developed a passion for providing care to the medically underserved and graduated with a distinction in community service. She completed her residency training at the University of New Mexico in 2016 where her focus centered around her efforts in teaching earning an award for the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. In addition, she was a resident director at a non-profit community health clinic that served the Albuquerque community.

Dr Malary Carter is a Miami, Florida native and of Haitian descent. She is fluent in French and Creole, and conversational in Spanish. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and relaxing at the beach.

Agueda Hernandez, MD, FAAFP is the Chief Medical Officer of Baptist Health Academics. She received her undergraduate and doctor of medicine degrees from Brown University. Dr. Hernandez joined Baptist Health South Florida in 2012 as the founding associate director of the West Kendall Baptist Hospital/Florida International University Family Medicine Residency and medical director of the Baptist Health Medical Group Family Medicine Center. The family medicine program was the first ACGME accredited residency at BHSF. Dr. Hernandez became the program director in 2015. During her tenure, the applicant pool grew from 300 to as many as 2000 candidates vying for four positions each year, and the program maintained a 100% Match fill rate with students from medical schools including FIU, UM, Nova and Tufts. She oversaw the graduation of four cohorts of residents with 100% board examination pass rate and a program mean far above the national mean. Residents and faculty have presented research and projects at national meetings including the annual educational conference of the ACGME and the scientific assembly of the American College of Cardiology. In 2019, two WKBH/FIU residents had a poster accepted for the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students of the American Academy of Family Physicians. It was one of 12 posters selected nationwide for onsite peer review. The family medicine residency graduates are practicing in diverse settings from urgent care to hospice, with most graduates remaining within BHSF including at West Kendall Baptist Hospital, Baptist Health Primary Care, and the South Miami Hospital emergency department.

Javier Hiriart, M.D., is an internist and a pediatrician, and faculty member of our residency program at the Family Medicine Center at West Kendall Baptist Hospital. Dr. Hiriart received his medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He completed a combined residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Prior to joining Baptist Health, he was director of primary care services for Camillus Health, responsible for the daily operation of primary and pediatric health services delivered to homeless and indigent patients. He is a voluntary clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and a voluntary clinical assistant professor of medicine at Florida International University's Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. For his teaching and leadership roles he has been recognized with awards from the American Academy of Family Physicians, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (honored as Medicine Attending of the Year by the med/peds residents in 2010) and American Medical Association. Dr. Hiriart is a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics and American College of Physicians.

Kaitlin Ross, M.D., is a family medicine and faculty member of our residency program at the Family Medicine Center at West Kendall Baptist Hospital. She received her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston in 2014 and completed her Family Medicine training at West Kendall Baptist Hospital/FIU in 2017. Dr. Ross conducts clinical research in family medicine with the goal of improving patient care outcomes. She has published her findings in peer-reviewed medical journals and presented numerous posters and abstracts at national and international scientific symposiums.
