What are blood cancers?

Blood cancers — also known as hematologic malignancies — impact your bone marrow and immune system. Like other types of blood disorders, blood cancers affect the normal production of blood cells.

There are several types of blood cancers:

  • Leukemia — cancer that begins in blood cells in your bone marrow. It then moves into your blood. In most cases, leukemia affects white blood cells.
  • Lymphoma — affects your lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system. Lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells that help you fight infection, grow abnormally and multiply. Ultimately, these cells make it hard for your immune system to function.
  • Myelodysplastic syndromes — cancers in which cells in your bone marrow don’t produce new blood cells correctly.
  • Myeloma — affects plasma cells, which are white blood cells that produce antibodies to help you fight infections and disease.
  • Myeloproliferative neoplasms — begin in stem cells in your bone marrow. These cancers cause your body to make an excess number of various blood cells but they grow very slowly.

Each type of blood cancer requires a different treatment approach. Find out more about some of the more common conditions our hematologic oncologists treat:
