How are hip and groin injuries diagnosed?

At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, diagnosis of your hip or groin condition or injury starts with a detailed discussion of the problem, followed by a comprehensive physical examination. A team approach is used to diagnose your injury or condition. This includes input from an athletic trainer and physical therapist who collaborate with our team of sports medicine doctors and orthopedic surgeons to determine your exact diagnosis and to provide the best plan of care.

Diagnostic imaging is often used to better understand the condition or injury. X-rays may be sufficient to confirm the diagnosis, but advanced imaging, such as CT scans with 3D reconstructions and high-resolution MRIs, may be needed to define the injury and help determine the treatment plan, including any pre-operative planning.

We also have access to several 3 Tesla MRI machines with stronger magnetic capacity than traditional MRIs to provide detailed images of the soft tissues of the hip and groin areas, even if you have an artificial hip. These tissues include cartilage, ligaments, tendons and muscles. The MRI images help us diagnose the exact location and extent of your injury and better prepare for your surgery. Advanced imaging also helps us create 3D custom joint replacements and allows for improved preoperative planning and fracture surgery.

When you come to Baptist Health Orthopedic Care for treatment, our goal is to find a treatment that fits your needs and expectations, while helping you get back to normal activities as quickly as possible.

We often start with conservative treatment options, such as anti-inflammatory techniques and personalized physical therapy. If, however, your injury is severe or if conservative therapies are no longer effective in treating your condition, we may recommend surgery. We provide a team approach that considers hip preservation as well as hip replacement (arthroplasty) as treatment options. We have access to some of the latest surgical technology, including robotic surgery techniques.

Our team includes experts in minimally invasive surgical treatments and hip preservation surgery to resolve bone impingement and to repair or reconstruct soft tissues that have been torn or otherwise compromised.

We also use 3D reconstruction and technologically advanced software for pre-operative planning and for guidance in surgery to be more precise in a surgical approach. This minimizes complications, pain and the need for a hip replacement later in life. If a hip replacement is necessary, Baptist Health Orthopedic Care surgeons are highly trained in total joint replacements, which use advanced technology such as 3D custom hip replacements.

With this precision, we can perform shorter surgeries and avoid complications, which means you will be able to recover quicker. These MRI machines can also take detailed images of an artificial hip, which is difficult to produce with a standard MRI.

  • Baptist Health Orthopedic Care is the only institution in the region with a formal fragility fracture program, which focuses on keeping patients safe and helping them recover quickly after a bone fracture. This program involves getting patients with a fragility fracture seen, diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible, with most patients out of the operating room less than 24 hours after they first arrive in the Emergency Room.

  • Robotic surgery platforms use advanced MRI and CT scans to help surgeons navigate during the procedure. During these procedures, surgical instruments are attached to the robotic arm, which is controlled by the surgeon. The robotic arm taps into a computer program that has access to the advanced imaging and details about the procedure and guides the surgeon for an optimal surgical outcome.
