Memory Disorders Program

Memory disorders (also called neurocognitive disorders or dementia) affect learning, memory, perception and problem-solving.

Memory disorders are most often caused by damage to areas of the brain responsible for storing or retaining memories. Some memory disorders develop suddenly. Others develop over time.

Most types of memory disorders are not passed down through families. Some rare forms of dementia can be hereditary. Our team will talk with you about your genetic risk for Alzheimer’s disease or another memory disorder.

Memory disorders can affect more than memory. They can cause changes to behavior, speech and thinking.

The Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care team treats all types of memory disorders, including:

• Alzheimer’s Disease
• Lewy Body Dementia
• Frontotemporal Degeneration (Frontotemporal Dementia)

Our team helps treat memory disorders caused by cerebrovascular disease (vascular dementia), Parkinson disease or stroke. We also treat behavioral problems caused by memory disorders.

Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care doctors conduct many tests to diagnose memory disorders. They start with a physical exam and test motor skills, sensory function, walking ability and balance.

Our team also conducts memory tests and speech and language evaluations. One of our neuropsychologists may evaluate you to understand your cognitive (thinking) abilities.

Sometimes, your doctor will order blood tests or tests of spinal fluid samples to make an accurate diagnosis.

Imaging tests are also used to diagnose memory disorders. These tests can detect brain changes or other conditions that could cause memory problems. The most common imaging tests used to diagnose memory disorders include:

• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
• High-Resolution Computed Tomography (CT) Scan
• Electroencephalography (EEG)
• Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan

Memory disorder treatment plans may also include cognitive programs or brain games. These therapies — often available on a home computer — can help improve symptoms and slow the progression of a memory disorder.
