What Does a Neuropsychologist Treat?

Neuropsychologists provide care for people with neurocognitive disorders. Many conditions can cause a neurocognitive disorder, including:

You may receive a neuropsychologist referral if you have experienced changes to your cognitive function due to issues with memory, language, personality or ability to focus.

Diagnosing Neurocognitive Disorders

Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care doctors conduct many tests to diagnose neurocognitive disorders. They start with a brief physical exam to test motor skills. Doctors also look for signs of hearing loss.

After a physical exam, you will take cognitive tests which our team uses to evaluate:

  • Behavior control (executive functioning)
  • Memory
  • Verbal skills

Neurocognitive Disorder Treatments

After a complete neurocognitive evaluation, the Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care neuropsychology team works with your primary care provider or neurologist to develop a treatment plan.

Our team may recommend a variety of treatments, including:

  • Certain medications
  • Cognitive stimulation (e.g., brain training games)
  • Exercise
  • Social activities

Our team may also recommend stopping certain medications that can lead to cognitive issues.
