Miami Cancer Institute is excited to embark on a journey to be a Magnet-designated healthcare organization. By earning this designation, we’ll join other institutions around the world that have proven to have nursing excellence, superior patient outcomes and a collaborative work environment. Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) is the highest and most prestigious distinction a healthcare organization can receive for nursing and patient care.

Achieving this designation carries widespread benefits. For patients, Magnet designation results in higher satisfaction, a safer environment, lower complication rates, shorter treatment times and improved clinical outcomes. For nurses, Magnet designation promotes empowerment, greater nurse autonomy, improved engagement, increased opportunities for professional development and education, higher nurse satisfaction, and lower nurse turnover and vacancy.

Our Nursing Values

Miami Cancer Institute nursing values:

  • Make a difference in the lives of patients, families and caregivers by delivering quality, evidence-based, patient- and family-centered care. We do this while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Promote and restore health and wellness and prevent illness while supporting end-of-life care for patients, families and their caregivers.
  • Maintain interprofessional collaboration and a professional practice that promotes accountable and autonomous nursing. We do this through our relationship-based care model and shared decision-making.

Our Nursing Philosophy

Miami Cancer Institute is a symbol of clinical excellence in every aspect of cancer care. Our nurses provide meaningful and compassionate care that focuses on the unique needs of our patients, their families and our community.

Nursing’s Relationship with Patients and Families

  • We recognize that each person is unique. We meticulously plan and provide individualized patient- and family-centered care in an environment that promotes acceptance, comfort and healing.
  • Our patients and families have the right to confidential, culturally sensitive, ethical and safe care that’s delivered by a collaborative team of cancer experts.
  • We empower our patients, families and communities through education and advocacy that focuses on collaboration and engagement. This information sharing supports their care decisions, including the choice to decline treatment.
  • We acknowledge the vulnerabilities of our diverse patient population and provide care respectful of their ethnicity, creed, nationality, religion, economic status and sexual orientation.

Nursing’s Relationship with Colleagues

  • Our interprofessional relationships contribute to a healthy work environment and directly influence the relationships we build with our patients, their families and our community.
  • We are dedicated to growing a just culture through our practices and support for transformational leadership, teamwork, shared governance and resource-driven practice. We focus on earning and sustaining exceptional outcomes in employee and patient engagement, as well as outstanding clinical outcomes.

Nursing’s Relationship with Ourselves

  • We commit to supporting the art and science of nursing through interprofessional collaboration, clinical inquiry, evidence-based practice, research and fostering a culture of life-long learning. Ultimately, we aim to contribute to the body of knowledge that improves cancer care and patient outcomes.
  • We are accountable and responsible for our individual nursing practice. We work collaboratively with our diverse team of cancer experts to elevate our care delivery in support of Miami Cancer Institute’s mission of providing world-class comprehensive cancer care to patients of all ages.

Nursing Contributions

From 2018 to 2021, our world-class nurses have made important contributions to Miami Cancer Institute’s outstanding clinical care and service. These contributions can be categorized under the five Magnet Model Components:
  • Leading Nursing Excellence

    • In April 2019, the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) awarded Miami Cancer Institute with the Outstanding Employer Award in the Large Employer category. The award acknowledges employers who show exemplary support for their oncology nurses.

    Leading Change

In FY 2020, when COVID-19 hit, the chief nursing officer/chief operating officer led organizational change by initializing an internally supported labor pool to address the patient and workforce challenges brought on by the pandemic.

    Mentorship and Collaboration

The Nursing team formalized a mentoring process and recruited and trained a pool of mentors. This mentor pool has grown from only 3 percent of nurses to 12 percent. This program creates a supportive culture across the organization. Collaboration through mentorship in healthcare has been shown to improve patient care and outcomes.

  • Professional Development

Nurses with advanced education are better prepared to care for patients in an increasingly complex healthcare delivery system. As of 2020, 92 percent of our nurses hold a Bachelor of Science in nursing and more than 60 percent hold a specialty certification.

  • Professional Practice

Miami Cancer Institute achieved 95 percent participation in the 2019 National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) RN Survey. These survey results, as well as the annual RN and direct care RN engagement survey, showed high engagement and work environment satisfaction. Engaged and satisfied nurses can lead to quality improvements and better patient care.

    Care Delivery

By partnering with representatives and organizations through the Community Volunteer Department, nurses at Miami Cancer Institute actively participate in community events. In FY 2019, nurses participated in 21 events, and in FY 2020, nurses participated in 17 community events.

  • Research

In FY 2020, the Nursing and Allied Health, Evidence-Based Practice and Research Council completed five research projects and published one PI project, 13 posters and a podium presentation at regional and national conferences. However, due to COVID-19, several conferences were canceled and nine presentations were not given in person. Conducting and advancing nursing research are important for delivering the most effective nursing care.

    Evidence-based Practice

In FY 2020, a series of mock codes and code blue simulations were conducted at Miami Cancer Institute. These simulations promoted increased competence and safety in the event of an emergency code.

    Innovation

In FY 2020, Miami Cancer Institute nurses, led by the Navigation team, were involved in an innovative way of following-up on COVID-19 cases and persons under investigation (PUI). This innovative care followed patients across the continuum of care by using Tap Cloud.

  • Engaging the Nursing Team

Engaged and satisfied nurses are central to effective and efficient caregiving teams. Miami Cancer Institute’s direct care nurse turnover rate is lower than the national average.

    Advancing Nursing Education

Miami Cancer Institute’s Transitional Oncology Nurse Academy program received the Association of Community Cancer Center’s (ACCC) prestigious 2020 Innovator Award. As the name suggests, the Innovator Award is designed to highlight cutting-edge ideas that other cancer centers can learn from.

    Delivering Quality Care

Our patient feedback and outcomes are proof of the positive impact our nurses have on the lives of the people we serve. Press Ganey survey results for overall nursing care consistently outperform the benchmark.
