At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, you have access to a team of highly skilled orthopedic trauma surgeons. Whether you need emergency surgery or treatment for a post-traumatic condition, our experts will help get you back to a normal, pain-free life.

Our top-level training, combined with access to the latest technology and therapies, allows us to create more personalized and effective treatment plans. Not only do we specialize in treating broken bones and other complex orthopedic injuries, we also help you recover from conditions, such as arthritis, infections or bone alignment problems, that may result from a traumatic injury. Ultimately, our goal is to get you back to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible.

Who benefits from orthopedic trauma surgery?

Orthopedic trauma surgery may be used to treat serious injuries like broken bones or to repair tissue damage caused by high-impact sports incidents or car accidents.

You may need expertise from a trauma surgeon if you have a fracture that is close to a joint, or if you have poor bone quality from osteoporosis. We can also help patients who have complications from an old injury. These post-traumatic conditions may be an infection, a deformity or arthritis.

What types of orthopedic trauma surgery are offered at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care?

Our team has expertise in traditional trauma surgery, as well as some of the latest minimally invasive and robotic surgery techniques. Depending on your injury, you may need an internal or external fixation surgical procedure. Internal fixation involves inserting screws, plates, wires or pins to help stabilize the bone. Our team also specializes in external fixation, which uses a circular frame on the outside of the bone. With external fixation, we work with you to adjust the frame gradually over time to help fix a bone deformity or lengthen a limb. Some patients may need a total joint replacement  after a traumatic injury. At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, we have access to the latest diagnostic tools and surgery techniques for joint reconstruction. This includes custom joint implants that are made with a 3D printer. Other treatments for more severe traumatic injuries may include limb lengthening and bone grafting. These treatments may also be used to help correct a previous traumatic injury that did not heal properly.

What can I expect when undergoing orthopedic trauma surgery at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care?

If you come to Baptist Health Orthopedic Care with a traumatic injury, you will first undergo diagnostic tests, such as an MRI or CT scan. These tests will allow your surgical team to better prepare for your surgery as they allow the surgeons to become familiar with your anatomy and determine exactly how the procedure will happen. Our advanced imaging techniques and tools also help us create 3D custom joint replacements and allow for improved preoperative planning and fracture surgery.

During surgery, we will try to preserve blood vessels and nerves using the latest surgical techniques. Our team will also try to limit the narcotics used during or after surgery to help speed up your recovery time.

We will talk with you and your caregiver about what to expect before, during and after treatment. Our goal is to get you moving and active as soon as possible, so our physical therapists will work closely with you to get you out of bed and moving shortly after surgery.

After treatment, you will undergo regular physical therapy. The length of time and type of physical therapy will be tailored to your needs and will depend on your surgery, age and activity level.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A post-traumatic condition is a complication that results from a traumatic injury. Post-traumatic conditions can include:

    • Bone and skin infections
    • Limb deformities that result from bones not healing properly
    • Arthritis

At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, we do everything possible to prevent these post-traumatic conditions. However, if you’re experiencing a post-traumatic condition, our team will help find an effective treatment even if you were not originally treated at our Institute.

  • The robotic surgery platforms used during some trauma surgeries incorporate advanced MRI and CT scans to help surgeons navigate around a patient’s anatomy. With this technique, surgical instruments are attached to a robotic arm, which is controlled by the surgeon. The robotic arm taps into a computer program that has access to the advanced imaging and details about the procedure, which helps guide the surgeon and prevents mistakes.

  • Baptist Health Orthopedic Care is the only institution in the region with a formal fragility fracture program. This program involves getting patients with fragility fractures seen, diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible, with most patients out of the operating room less than 24 hours after they first arrive in the Emergency Room. Additionally, the trauma surgeons help identify when a patient’s bone fracture likely resulted from an underlying condition, such as osteoporosis. These patients are then referred to a Primary Care Sports Medicine physician who helps them manage their recovery and their underlying condition to reduce the risk of future fractures or injuries.
