What can I expect when undergoing orthopedic trauma surgery at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care?
If you come to Baptist Health Orthopedic Care with a traumatic injury, you will first undergo diagnostic tests, such as an MRI or CT scan. These tests will allow your surgical team to better prepare for your surgery as they allow the surgeons to become familiar with your anatomy and determine exactly how the procedure will happen. Our advanced imaging techniques and tools also help us create 3D custom joint replacements and allow for improved preoperative planning and fracture surgery.
During surgery, we will try to preserve blood vessels and nerves using the latest surgical techniques. Our team will also try to limit the narcotics used during or after surgery to help speed up your recovery time.
We will talk with you and your caregiver about what to expect before, during and after treatment. Our goal is to get you moving and active as soon as possible, so our physical therapists will work closely with you to get you out of bed and moving shortly after surgery.
After treatment, you will undergo regular physical therapy. The length of time and type of physical therapy will be tailored to your needs and will depend on your surgery, age and activity level.

The robotic surgery platforms used during some trauma surgeries incorporate advanced MRI and CT scans to help surgeons navigate around a patient’s anatomy. With this technique, surgical instruments are attached to a robotic arm, which is controlled by the surgeon. The robotic arm taps into a computer program that has access to the advanced imaging and details about the procedure, which helps guide the surgeon and prevents mistakes.

Baptist Health Orthopedic Care is the only institution in the region with a formal fragility fracture program. This program involves getting patients with fragility fractures seen, diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible, with most patients out of the operating room less than 24 hours after they first arrive in the Emergency Room. Additionally, the trauma surgeons help identify when a patient’s bone fracture likely resulted from an underlying condition, such as osteoporosis. These patients are then referred to a Primary Care Sports Medicine physician who helps them manage their recovery and their underlying condition to reduce the risk of future fractures or injuries.
