The Post-Graduate Year 2 (PGY2) Investigational Drugs and Research Pharmacy Residency Program at the Miami Cancer Institute, located on the Baptist Hospital campus, is a 52-week pharmacy specialty-training program in candidate status seeking accreditation from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of the program is to develop well-rounded Investigational Drug Service pharmacists and effective clinical instructors who can provide high-level clinical care in in the research setting, effectively share their knowledge, and promote learning among students and other residents.

The residency program provides exposure to the regulatory and operational requirements that govern clinical research and to cultivate skills necessary to provide clinical care to research participants in the medical oncology and hematologic setting. The training is coordinated to allow residents to master the competencies established within the ASHP practice standards for the PGY2 residency in Investigational Drugs and Research. Residents will develop expertise in implementing and managing clinical trials, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to promote safe and effective patient care, and advancing pharmacy practice within the clinical research enterprise. In addition, residents will develop skills in leadership, research and teaching through projects, staff education and co-precepting PGY1 residents and pharmacy students.

The Miami Cancer Institute Pharmacy Team was awarded the 2022 Warren E. Weaver/Richard P. Penna Award by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) recognized for the organization's commitment to advancing health equity and patient care. The department has over 30 board-certified pharmacists, several of whom carry dual board certification, and residency preceptors within all specialized practice environments in oncology including breast, lung, head and neck, skin, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, gynecologic cancers, neuro oncology, hematology, bone marrow transplant, and cellular therapy, investigational drug therapies, and pediatric hematology and oncology. Furthermore, several research pharmacists completed the ASHP Investigational Drug Service certification program and are experienced practitioners in the research setting.

After successful completion of this program, the graduating resident will have the necessary knowledge and skills in order demonstrate clinical and leadership abilities to perform as an Investigational Drug Service clinical specialist.
