What Is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in males behind skin cancer. It develops when cancerous (malignant) cells form in your prostate gland. The prostate is the walnut-size gland that produces and stores semen.

Prostate cancer affects everyone differently. It often develops slowly and produces no symptoms. In fact, it’s possible to have prostate cancer and not know it. But if you do experience symptoms, they can include:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Discomfort while urinating
  • Frequent urination
  • Visible blood in urine or semen

Diagnosing Prostate Cancer

Early detection makes treating prostate cancer easier. That’s why regular screenings are important. They can identify early-stage disease.

If you have signs of prostate cancer, our specialists will work with you to understand your symptoms. We will discuss your health history and use several advanced tools to deliver the most accurate diagnosis. These tools include:

  • Digital rectal exams
  • Genetic testing
  • Imaging (CT and MRI scans)
  • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests

According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for prostate cancer that hasn’t spread is over 99 percent. For advanced cancer that has spread throughout the body, the five-year survival rate drops to 34 percent.
