We know that every patient is unique. That's why our approach to treating cancer care is personalized.

If your cancer treatment plan includes proton therapy, you can trust Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute. As the leader of proton therapy in South Florida, we combine compassionate care and advanced technology.

Using pencil-beam scanning (PBS) technology in conjunction with state-of-the-art volumetric and surface imaging technologies, we can maximize the delivery precision and accuracy of Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) treatments.

With the latest generation proton delivery platform, we are the first center in the United States to bring each of these advances together — making this highly sophisticated cancer care easily accessible to our patients.

What is proton therapy?

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation. It uses high-energy streams of proton particles to treat cancers with precision. Pencil-beam scanning (named for being the width of a pencil) targets cancer cells and saves healthy tissue. Because proton dose can be programmed to come to a localized stop inside the targeted area, the radiation dose is delivered with minimal injury to the surrounding healthy tissue.

How does Proton Therapy Work?

Pencil-Beam Scanning Is Precise

Proton therapy uses beams of radiation about the width of a pencil. Like a 3D printer, small pencil beams of protons with different energies deliver dose to the tumor, one layer at a time. This enables us to closely follow the shape of the tumor in 3D and avoid healthy tissue.

Advantages of Proton Therapy For Children

If your family is facing childhood cancer, proton therapy offers a new measure of hope for effectiveness and gentleness. Proton therapy can minimize unwanted side effects. This makes it ideal for pediatric cancers requiring radiotherapy treatment. Our proton therapy area has dedicated equipment for pediatric patients.

What to Expect at Proton Therapy Treatments

Typically, you will receive daily proton therapy as an outpatient and will not have a need to stay overnight in the hospital. The number of treatment sessions will vary based upon your type and stage of cancer.

The first step will be developing your individual treatment plan based upon specialized CT or MRI scans. You’ll get familiar with the space and lie on a table in the same position that you will later receive treatment. Your treatment team will then determine the amount of radiation to deliver over a specific period of time. Generally, patients come to the center five times a week over multiple weeks.

When it’s time for treatment, you will lie on the treatment table and be placed in the correct treatment position. Your radiation therapists will then take images to make sure you are properly positioned. You may be repositioned several times and the process repeated.

Once the treatment area is confirmed, we will begin your treatment. You will not feel the proton radiation as it is administered, but you will hear the machine and see it rotate to different position. You will be in the proton treatment room for 20-60 minutes. Usually, patients can resume normal activities immediately after treatment.

Proactive Approach to Managing Side Effects

At Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, we will help limit how cancer treatments affect your day-to-day life. We’ll tell you what to expect during each phase of your treatment and we will take a proactive approach to managing any side effects.

‘Pete,’ a 220-ton cyclotron and the cornerstone of the first proton therapy center in South Florida, arrived at Miami Cancer Institute, after a 4,700-mile transatlantic journey from Belgium. From its arrival at berth 19 at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, the cyclotron was transported by a 64-wheel flatbed trailer operated by two drivers, who made the overnight drive to Miami.
