Frequently Asked Questions

  • Pulmonary rehabilitation is an outpatient service offered to help patients reduce and manage the symptoms and complications of breathing conditions. Baptist Health South Florida has several hospitals in the region to offer this rehabilitation program that is designed to improve your pulmonary function and overall health.

During pulmonary rehabilitation, patients participate in personalized and monitored exercises. You and your loved ones also receive education and counseling to ensure your conditions are managed properly at home.

Both South Miami Hospital’s and Mariners Hospital’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs are certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) for their advanced practices and management of pulmonary conditions, such as COPD, and their stellar patient outcomes.

  • When you suffer from chronic pulmonary disease, such as COPD or pneumonia, you often are in and out of the emergency department and have frequent hospital stays. The Lung Health Clinic provides outpatient management of chronic pulmonary disease, so patients are less likely to need inpatient or Emergency Room care. In fact, the readmission rate of these patients is below the national rate, indicating our program’s success with evaluation, medication monitoring, lifestyle modifications, patient education and quick intervention.

For more information or to make an appointment, call the Lung Health Center at 786-662-8146.

  • Lung cancer has a higher chance of being cured if it is caught early. If you have a heavy smoking history – you may be eligible for a low-dose CT scan to detect early signs of lung cancer. You’re a candidate for this lung screening if you:

    • Are 55-80 years old.
    • Have no signs or symptoms of lung cancer.
    • Are a current smoker or have quit smoking within the
      last 15 years.
    • Have a smoking history of 30-pack years or greater (a
pack a day for 30 years, two packs a day for 15 years,
      etc.).
    • Have received a prescription from a physician or qualified non-physician practitioner.

  • When you are diagnosed with lung cancer, our pulmonologists work with the medical, radiation and surgical oncologists, including our team of thoracic surgeons, at Miami Cancer Institute to make sure you receive the most advanced treatment options. If you need to have lung surgery, we have the most advanced robot-assisted surgical system. This minimally invasive surgery technique means less pain and a faster recovery for you.
