Questions to Ask Your Doctor Before Surgery

While many of us are engrossed in the hustle and bustle of holiday celebrations and gift buying, some people are getting ready to have an elective surgery they may have put off until the end of the year.

As with any type of medical procedure, patients often have a lot of questions for their doctor. And because surgery almost always involves anesthesia and specific preparations, the information patients need to discuss with their surgeon can be plentiful.

“It’s important for patients to know ahead of time how to prepare for surgery and to ask questions if they’re unsure about any aspect of the procedure,” said George R. Tershakovec, M.D., medical director of general surgery at Homestead Hospital. “Patients play a major role in their own outcomes. Discussing with their surgeon before the surgery any concerns they may have helps to reduce anxiety and prepare accordingly.”

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), Dr. Tershakovec has performed thousands of surgeries during his more than 35 years in practice. He is an advocate of patient-doctor communication which helps optimize surgical care. It also helps educate patients about ways they can contribute to their own well-being.

The Baptist Health News Team asked Dr. Tershakovec some of the most common questions patients have before surgery, including:

  • What type of anesthesia will I have?
  • What preparations must be made before surgery?
  • Can I eat or drink before surgery? and
  • What can I expect during my recovery?

Watch the video now for an explanation of anesthesia options, steps to take before surgery, and details about pain management after surgery.
