What screening tests are available for breast cancer?
For women, the most important screening test for breast cancer is an annual mammogram — a special X-ray of the breast. While recommendations can vary, Baptist Health South Florida supports annual mammograms for women at average risk starting at age 40. Talk to your doctor about your specific risk and what is right for you.
Baptist Health South Florida offers screening mammograms at several convenient locations to ensure access to these vital services. Our digital technology allows radiologists to manipulate the size, orientation, brightness and contrast of the images to enhance the breast evaluation. We also use computer-aided detection to help radiologists detect cancer at earlier stages, when it is most treatable.
An annual clinical breast exam is also recommended. Your gynecologist or primary care doctor may examine your breasts by hand, to feel for any lumps or abnormalities.
