How are shoulder conditions diagnosed?

At Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, we thoroughly evaluate each patient to determine the most effective treatment. Our team will use a combination of a physical exam and diagnostic tests to verify the type of shoulder problem you have. After a physical exam, we may use imaging, such as X-rays, CT scans and MRIs, to determine the extent of your injury and how best to treat it.

How are shoulder conditions treated at Baptist Health Orthopedic Care?

When treating shoulder conditions, we focus on using conservative treatments, including rest, heat and ice, and slings, whenever possible. In some cases, we may also recommend physical therapy to help rebuild strength and range of motion in your shoulder.

Some conditions, including rotator cuff injuries, may be treated with cortisone steroid injections.

Depending on your condition, we may also recommend surgery to repair torn ligaments and tendons or to remove damaged tissue. The surgery may be traditional open surgery or a minimally invasive procedure known as arthroscopic surgery. This type of surgery uses a thin camera called an arthroscope, which the doctor inserts through a small incision in the joint. The camera allows the doctor to see inside the joint and make repairs.
