Surprise Pep Rally for Hometown Hero at Baptist Hospital (Video)

South Dade High School Principal Javier Perez got an unexpected holiday surprise at the Baptist Hospital Rehabilitation Center as the Miami HEAT and Tissot watches staged a mini pep rally to honor Perez with “Gift of Time in recognition of his time and service to the South Florida community.”

Perez suffered life-threatening injuries and lost both his legs after being struck by an SUV driven by an alleged drunk driver earlier this year. “Javi,” as he is known to his students, has always had a passion for education and sports. The accident occurred while Perez was coaching his son’s little league game.

Miami HEAT Legend Alonzo Mourning, the HEAT Dancers, Burnie the HEAT mascot and about 150 of Perez’s students were on hand as the beloved principal was given tickets to the December 22nd HEAT game against the Los Angeles Lakers, where Perez will be recognized as a Tissot “hometown hero.” Perez also received a Tissot time piece and a check for $7,500 to assist with his medical expenses and prosthetics.

Perez continues his rehabilitation at Baptist Hospital while working towards his goal of returning to South Dade High and walk in on his own without any assistance. Baptist Health South Florida is the official medical provider for the Miami HEAT.
