What are the symptoms of pediatric blood disorders?

Symptoms depend on the type of disorder and the blood components affected. Some common symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath or weakness
  • Bruising easily
  • A blood clot, which can cause swelling, redness and warmth in the affected area
  • A very fine skin rash caused by too few platelets
  • Blood blisters in the mouth caused by too few platelets or clotting problems
  • Pale skin caused by anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Eating ice, dirt or clay, as these cravings can indicate decreased iron in the blood

How are pediatric blood disorders diagnosed?

Diagnostic methods can vary depending on the disorder. Some common tools include:

  • Blood tests, such as a complete blood cell count, red and white blood cell counts, tests to check hemoglobin and iron levels, and blood clotting tests
  • Thyroid function tests
  • Vitamin level tests
  • Urine tests
  • Bone marrow aspiration or biopsy (removing a tissue sample for evaluation)
