What are the symptoms of parathyroid tumors?

You may or may not have symptoms. Parathyroid tumors may also cause hyperparathyroidism, an elevated level of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Most symptoms and signs of hyperparathyroidism are caused by high calcium levels in the blood, and can include:

  • Muscle weakness
  • Fatigue and sleepiness
  • Feelings of depression
  • Achy bones and joints
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Constipation
  • Confusion or impaired thinking and memory
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Osteopenia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Kidney stones

How are parathyroid tumors diagnosed?

Blood tests can detect hyperparathyroidism and high calcium levels in the blood, which may indicate a parathyroid tumor. Doctors may use ultrasound, computed tomography (CT or CAT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear medicine scans to help them see the tumor.
