Through the leadership and support of founding CEO and Executive Medical Director Michael J. Zinner, M.D. and Executive Deputy Director and Chief Medical Officer Leonard Alan Kalman, M.D., the arts have been given a significant role in cultivating a healing environment at Miami Cancer Institute. Research shows that artistic intervention, where the arts are brought into a healthcare facility, can improve health outcomes and transform the patient experience. Benefits can include reduced pain and anxiety, and improved well-being during cancer treatment.
Here are some powerful ways that Miami Cancer Institute is bringing the arts to our staff, patients and caregivers:
Arts in Medicine
Miami Cancer Institute has built a robust Arts in Medicine Program that encompasses visual, literary and performing arts. Artists-in-residence engage patients in creative, immersive experiences in the waiting areas, lobbies and infusion suites. Through our Arts in Medicine Program, which is fully funded by philanthropy, patients experience music, song, color and visual beauty and create their own masterpieces.
The Arts in Medicine program at Miami Cancer Institute is supported by philanthropic donors to Baptist Health Foundation.

Art and Design Program
The Institute’s Art and Design Program features the work of dozens of visual artists and artisans from all over the world. A selection of handcrafted quilts and textiles, generously donated by JPMorgan Chase and dating from 1800 to the present, greets patients and visitors in the Institute’s first floor lobbies, while large-scale sculptures enhance the surrounding grounds. To complement the presentation of these gifts to the Institute’s Art and Design Collection, a series of special exhibitions, mounted in the Shaham Family Gallery, will change periodically.
Baptist Health Foundation is grateful to the Powell family and JPMorgan Chase for their generous philanthropic support.
The Shaham Family Gallery at Miami Cancer Institute is named in honor of the family of Jacob and Helen Shaham, philanthropic donors to Baptist Health Foundation.
