How is bone cancer treated?

Every patient at Miami Cancer Institute receives a personalized treatment plan put together by our team of medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists and interventional oncologists.

Our philosophy is to find the plan that not only treats the cancer, but also fits you as a patient. Your care team will consider your specific diagnosis and type of tumor, the stage of disease, size and location of tumor and whether it has spread to other parts of your body. We also work closely with physical therapists, nurses, nutritionists and psychosocial experts to ensure we address any potential side effects of treatment.

Surgery

Surgery is an essential part of our treatment for bone tumors. During surgery, we will remove the tumor and may also remove some surrounding tissue and bone. Orthopedic oncologists at Miami Cancer Institute are specially trained in limb-sparing surgery, so patients can maintain use of their arms or legs after the tumor and tissue has been removed. We also specialize in reconstructive surgery with prostheses.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation is often used alongside surgery to treat some bone tumors. At Miami Cancer Institute, we have the only proton-beam radiation therapy technology in South Florida. Proton-beam therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that uses high-energy protons to treat tumors. It is more precise than traditional radiation therapy, which means it can be more effective in treating the cancer with fewer side effects to healthy tissue.

Chemotherapy

In some cases, your care team may also decide to use chemotherapy prior to surgery to shrink the tumor before removing it.

Interventional Oncology

Interventional Oncology uses minimally invasive techniques, such as tumor ablation, to treat bone cancer. This procedure uses needle-like probes to deliver high heat or cold gas to burn or freeze tumors.

Limb salvage surgery and the new advances in the field are allowing our patients to have the tumor removed while maintaining a functional limb and a good quality of life; the future is definitely looking brighter for them.
Tumor Board

Tumor Board

A multidisciplinary team of cancer experts including surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic reconstructive surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, genetic counselors, medical geneticists, social workers, patient navigators and clinical trials staff meet weekly to discuss select complex cases and determine the best course of care.

Clinical Trials

Clinical Trials

Miami Cancer Institute can provide access to clinical trials not widely available elsewhere. Clinical trials find new ways to treat and diagnose cancer and are ongoing. If an appropriate trial is available, we will talk to you about the benefits and risks.
