Watch Now: Exercise Tips for Weight Management

Nearly 49 million adults in the U.S. — approximately 35 percent — are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Overall, more than two-thirds of adults in the U.S. are either overweight or obese, according to federal data.

“If you’re looking to lose weight, it’s important to increase your physical activity but maintain a balanced diet,” says Jennifer Oestreich, supervisor at the Wellness Center at Mariners Hospital. “Remember: You can never out exercise a bad diet.”

It’s not just a matter of extra pounds. Health conditions linked to obesity include heart disease, several forms of cancer and type 2 diabetes.

Fortunately, diet and exercise can make a difference, Ms. Oestreich says. Her weight management recommendations include plenty of aerobic exercise and strength training—with medical clearance from your doctor.
