Watch Now: Germ-Zapping Robot at Doctors Hospital

(VIDEO: Watch “Magneto,” Doctors Hospital’s Xenex Germ-Zapping Robot in action, and hear why it is making a difference in patient safety.)

It may look like something out of a science fiction movie, but this is one robot with a very specific mission; killing harmful multi-drug resistant organisms. At a height of just over five feet, the Xenex Germ-Zapping Robot is the newest ally in the fight against secondary infection at several Baptist Health facilities.

Baptist Health South Florida is the first healthcare organization in the area to deploy the robot, which uses pulsed xenon ultraviolet light that is 25,000 times more powerful than sunlight to destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and bacterial spores. The technology kills superbugs like MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and Clostridium difficile (C.diff) and can also be an effective tool against the Ebola virus, destroying it on surfaces in less than two minutes.

The technology is currently being used at Doctors Hospital, Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital.
