A moving black-and-white photographic tribute to the dedicated women and men who practice nursing has found a permanent home. Baptist Health South Florida has donated The Art of Nursing, a compelling photo series by photographer Fareed Al-Mashat, to Barry University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. The series of 15 framed, oversized photographs will be on exhibit and then permanently displayed on campus. A larger series of Al-Mashat’s nursing photos were featured in a 2013 book, also titled The Art of Nursing.
“Baptist Health South Florida is the region’s largest provider of expertise in nursing practice, and we depend on Barry’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences to provide highly qualified graduates to join our workforce,” said Deborah Mulvihill, MSN, R.N., corporate vice president and chief nursing officer of Baptist Health South Florida. “We are pleased to share these photographs with one of our most valued community partners.”
John McFadden, Ph.D., CRNA, dean of Barry University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences, said, “While our nursing students are immersed in their studies on campus, the emotions captured in these photos will remind them of the important human element of their chosen career. We are grateful to Baptist Health for providing this means of motivating and inspiring our future nurses.”
A public exhibition for the series will take place from Thursday, Aug. 27 to Friday, Sept. 4, at Andy Gato Gallery at Barry University (located in Thompson Hall, second floor). The gallery will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public, and parking is available in the visitor lot at Barry University’s main entrance.
